Here are a few pictures today of the whales in Haro Straits. These pictures were taken in July when the whales are heading to a big whale party in the Straits of Georgia where they reunite with the other pods. There are three pods of endangered southern resident orcas with less than 90 whales. The threatened northern group has more than 200 whales in 16 pods.K and L pods arrived later than usual as this seems to depend upon the available salmon - they love to eat chinook, the larger salmon.Sometimes the whales come down the west coast of the island but lately use the inside route. K and L pods spend time in southern California as the salmon runs were restored in the Sacramento and the Columbia Rivers. We were on our way to Sidney Spit when we saw the whales come directly for us ...there are regulations on how close you can go to the whales. It would be better for the whales to see them from Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island.

Wow! Those Orcas seem to own the waters. Great photos as usual and wonderful post.
Beautiful shot, Ocean!
So cool, and the vocalizations just put you there!!
Aren't they wonderful? I could watch them all day. Your eagle pictures below are all fantastic, too! I wish there was a picturesque place like this here, where I could see eagles! Stunning!
must be wonderful to see all those whales
That is amazing!
There's a great article that ran in the last -Orion- magazine about a man who plays music with whales. I bet you could find it on their website--it's really amazing stuff.
Thanks so much for all your comments...your comments are truly appreciated...

Hi Kathryn and Ari...thanks for the comments and cheers!! I will check out that article, thanks.
How fortunate you are to be able to take these pictures. They are beautiful. I went on a whale watching excursion one day and only managed to get a picture of a rounded back above the water's surface; and I thought that was great :-) Your pictures are wonderful.
Hi Me and My Camera, thanks so much for coming to see my blog...I hope this year to get much better photos with the larger lens I have now....cheers and thanks again.
