Yellow-Headed Blackbird Swan Lake

Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary Bird News!
There was a Yellow-headed Blackbird at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary this week.

We thought we would go and look for it.  When we got there it was not around.  But there was a News Crew from CTV News. It is a rare bird for our area so all the birders were going there also.  Two of the birders are interviewed by the News Crew and also the Director of Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary was interviewed.

For ABC Wednesday "Q"
Now for some "q" words for the ABC Meme as this week is the letter Q.  We were going to quit our search for the Yellow-headed blackbird when it quickly showed up!  It was on the quay or floating bridge right in front of us.  We did not feel qualified to be interviewed but some other birders were questioned by the News Crew and I will put in a link at the end to the video of it.

It was a lovely little bird and so tame.  It liked to eat the seeds people put down on the floating bridge across Swan Lake.

In time the floating bridge will need to be replaced and hopefully we can all band together and provide some of the funds needed for this big project.  I hope to do a future posting on what exciting things they are planning for fund raising. Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is an amazing place and one of the best places to go for birds and butterflies. Here is a selection of photos I have taken there over the last weeks.

Here is a link to the CTV News Video on the rare Yellow-headed Blackbird.  It starts with an Advertisement, don't let it quash you, hang in there.  You will see ME in a blue coat in the background on the bridge and hubby is the one holding the big camera lens, in black shirt.  We are non-talkers and were happy to let more knowledgeable birders talk.

    1. Hi Robin, glad you got to see the video clip of it on my Facebook! The southern half of British Columbia can get these birds but we don't see them on the island that often.

    1. Hi John, yes it just flew down in front of me and started to eat the seeds on the floating bridge! I had to jostle a spot as there were a lot of people looking at it and cameras clicking.

    1. Hi Margaret, thanks for checking out the video. I think video clips show so much more than a picture can. It was all about good timing, and a very friendly bird!

    1. Yes I took that duck picture just after the Yellow-headed blackbird flew into the shrubs at the side of the bridge. I am happy just to see a duck these days! The yellow-headed blackbirds are mostly in the prairies and midwest US, central North America.

    1. Hi Nancy, yes it was so much fun when he flew down in front of us. Birds normally fly the opposite direction from my camera! After he flew into the bush, I stayed by myself there and I could see him on the ground in the marsh shoreline. His yellow head showed up quite well.

  7. Good Morning Nora. I read your comment and clicked on your link to this post [I'm in my personal blog admin tho]. I just watched the video on your newscast! A beautiful area for birding.

And the duck and red-winged blackbird didn't get much attention....the yellowheaded is a favorite of mine! Loved seeing it in the reed grasses in the marsh.

Lovely images and thanks for sharing it all with us birders at I'd Rather B Birdin' this week.
