We are welcoming all Brown Pelicans to the Victoria Inner Harbour! It is so weird and I don't know why they are here in this wet, winter weather but it truly is wonderful to witness.
It is "w" week at ABC Wednesday Meme so you will see a lot of silly "w" words. You will have to click "read more" below. Please continue reading to see all the pictures...the link is below this....people don't see it ....
They all seem to be flying between Fishermen's Wharf, Ogden Point and Pelly Island.
There are a whole bunch of youngsters and a few adults with the white on them. I think there may be as many a two dozen of them all together. Apparently it is unusual that the mature adults are with them.
They are not wary of us anymore as they land right on the wharf now. These pictures were taken with very little light.
Their weight is up to 5.5 kilograms and their wingspan is approximately up to 2.5 metres. Below see the difference having good light makes.
They circle really high up and then hit the water with quite a splash when they dive. They are diving for small bait in the water right next to the dock where on a sunny day, about 40 photographers and on-lookers are all gathered around. Some people come for the day. Others are just wandering along and walking and passing by. It was sunny and fairly warm on our second trip there and everyone was holding coffee and a snack from the nearby restaurant and a camera.
I really like them. The young ones are so cute and fearless of anything. I have not ever witnessed a wild bird being so tame. The first week they were here they were a little bit more shy but not now. If there is bait in the water watch out!! It is Pelican Madness here.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the loss of the children this week in
Newtown. I truly hope the access to guns can be restricted now.
Thank you to these memes for allowing bloggers to share their story. I may not remember to enter them all but I still list them as this is the quick way for me to do it.
