Going Home 2

A story about going home today....about when I was young.

I can never go home. I can never walk in that familiar worn old door and feel my past settle all around me like a worn tattered blanket. I can never walk up the hill again anticipating how wonderful to see her again. She was something so familiar to me - she was like a fragment of me.

I can never go back to her or back to my past. I can never visit who I was or where I came from ever again. Everything that I was or had or knew is now gone. I can never go home.

I can never smell the smells - the ocean fresh like a storm coming in, the rich earth, black and thick fragile dainty trails to walk upon, ditches full of ferns and salal wet from the spring rain. There was fish cooking at home and down on the docks the men worked on the nets.

Everything was wild - wet and wild. Taste the salt on your lips from steely waves splashing on you, pushed up by gales of bitter wind and spray. Everything was so wild, so wet, so primitive and so isolated.

I can never see the colors again painted on an endless horizon of powder blue, the delicate pink blush of the winter sunset, the pale mauve of her spring lilac tree. I can't see the green, a green so deep of the sea grasses and the dappled sea, hard and cold, steely gray one minute and soft caressing mercury the next.

I can never be in that place or that time again. It is so final, so irrevocable I can never be that person again and I can never be a part of her again. I can never be young again. I can never be the person I was then. I will never see my mom again or my watercolor home. I only see them in my dreams and my memories.

  1. What a nice poetical text...!

  2. I can never go home again, at least it would not be the same. My quiet hometown has turned into gang territory in Southern California. I go back there in my dreams, but it's not like my hometown of today, it's always as I remember it as a child and teenager. Maybe there are many reasons we can't and shouldn't try to go home. - Margy

  3. Very nice - I know what you mean - and how painful it can be if you try.

Cheers (and hope you had a good Christmas) - Stewart M - Melbourne

  4. Great pictures and wonderful narration, Nora!
    Happy New Year:)

  5. I've had some uncharacteristic nostalgia for my hometown this past year.

  6. The past is what it is...whatever we would love to, we can't go back... only in our memories, thankfully those we have always.

whatever will happen or not, we'll just have to wait and see but I do wish with all of my heart that you and your loved ones will have the most beautiful and happy healthy blessed year ever !

    Have a ♥-warming ABC-Wednes-day / -week

  7. You have a wonderful way with words. Sometimes that's enough to go back in time for a moment.

  8. Thanks so much for these lovely comments. I will reply on each of your blogs as time permits. I appreciate your comments so much.
