Lovely White Hawk

Today we found a lovely white Red-tailed hawk out in the farm fields in Sidney or .....

I guess it could be called Central Saanich which is not far from Sidney.  There were two Red-tailed hawks, one was mature with some red on the tail and the other was younger.  This is not too far from the Spunky hawk nest area, perhaps three miles.
This one flew over us and it looked darker and older.  Then I noticed a white one sitting on a branch not far from where we were.

You can click on the photos for a larger photo but the photos are not good so I put them in as a collage.
This one does not seem to have any red on the tail which would mean that he was a younger one.

They were really far away and I grabbed the heavy camera with the big lens and forgot that the setting on the lens was not set correctly for that length of a shot so they are all blurry.  Grrrr  I had not used that camera for a while as I gave it to my husband as it is too heavy for me and I did check all the settings except that one setting on the lens.  We went back later but no hawks there then.

His eye has the nictitating membrane showing.  I was wondering if this could be Spunky? Perhaps he has a mate.

Then they both flew to this tree and sat in the tree for a while.  Perhaps a nest nearby.
Two hawks in the tree, one on top one lower down.

I made a video but have not looked at it and it will not be good.
So sorry I could not get better photos as the distance was too far but we can go back and check on them again.  We did a check of the eagles at the Sidney Spunky Hawk nest but did not see any eagles there at all?  Wonder where they are?

On Facebook you can see my Island Rambles Page where I post frequently. I post videos frequently on my Island Rambles YouTube Channel also. You can find me on Twitter here.

  4. All your photos are great. I likes ones of the hawk in flight. Such handsome creatures. I used to see a lot more red-tail hawks in our county. I guess the increasing developments are taking away their homelands. I'm so sorry for that.

  5. I love your pictures, blurry or not. They are a celebration of life and your engagement in the beauty of our world! Thanks for sharing with us!

  6. I like to think it is Spunky.

  7. Indeed it is a lovely white hawk for L and fantastic photography!
